On October 4, 2016, Hurricane Matthew swept through Haiti, killing 546 people. Hit since 2010 by several natural disasters, the poorest country in the Americas was already struggling to recover. The United Nations estimates that more than 2 million people were affected by the hurricane, especially in the south of the island. 90% of the houses and buildings in the department of Grand'Anse were destroyed as well as food stocks. Haiti has suffered from a depletion of its food reserves. More than 3,000 cases of cholera have been recorded.

CARE

CARE was able to respond to the immediate needs of the victims with food and clean water supplemented by distributions of hygiene kits and emergency shelter. The partner association is also involved in the reconstruction of 5 partially destroyed schools and is in the process of installing 10 child-friendly centres in areas where schools have been damaged.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has also mobilized alongside Haitians. Coordinated by the International Federation of Red Cross Societies, the teams participated in relief distributions, needs assessments and strengthened available logistics. The (French) Red Cross then dispatched non-food items as well as mobile clinics to treat the local population.

MSF teams have been mobilized to set up mobile clinics, monitor the cholera epidemic, and organize consultations, primarily for children. Concerned about the supply of drinking water, the association, although specialized in medical response, has also invested in the repair of the water network and distributed water purifiers to families in the municipality of Baradères. Pipes, tanks, blankets and kitchen and hygiene kits were provided to families in the Cayemite Islands. MSF has also set up a Cholera Treatment Centre in Port-à-Piment where several patients have been treated.
