On June 3, 2018, a violent eruption of the "Volcàn de Fuego" in Guatemala caused a burning cloud destroying several villages and causing the death of nearly 200 people and the evacuation of 12,000 others. More generally, 1.7 million people were affected by the medium-term consequences of the eruption, particularly in connection with the destruction of crops by ashes in this country still strongly oriented towards the agricultural economy. The Rescue & Recover Fund has mobilized by launching an international emergency campaign with all BNP Paribas stakeholders from 13 June (employees, Group retirees in France, and BDDF customers) to finance the actions of its two partners on the ground, CARE and the Red Cross.

CARE runs an emergency programme from the event until June 2019, and is providing support to people who had to be evacuated to temporary shelters. These will be gradually closed as populations return to their habitats or are hosted by third parties. CARE's teams have several objectives:

  • Build temporary shelters and distribute basic necessities
  • Install water distribution systems, garbage cans, and install showers and latrine
  • Launch a campaign to prevent gender-based violence
