Heavy rains in the Balkans in May caused some of the most disastrous floods in the region in a century. These resulted in the death of nearly 60 people. Some villages were completely covered by muddy waters and nearly 150,000 people had to be evacuated throughout the region.
To respond to the very alarming humanitarian situation, CARE and the Red Cross intervened urgently and distributed emergency packages including basic necessities (food, blankets, mattresses...) but also water pumps to prevent the risk of epidemiological disaster.
